    January

    Samsung lost its battle against Apple in Germany to reverse the ban on the sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Higher Regional Court in Dusseldorf backed the ban in a ruling, which said that Samsung wrongfully took advantage of the enormous reputation and prestige of the iPad and that the Galaxy Tab unfairly imitates the Apple tablet.

    February

    James Murdoch stepped down as chairman of News International, the publisher of the Sun and Times, in an internal News Corporation reshuffle. Murdoch had faced much flak for his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal at News of the World. Murdoch took up the job in December 2007, when he joined News Corp from BSkyB, where he had been chief executive.

    Publicis Groupe . the world fs third-largest advertising holding group by revenue . was on an acquisition spree in 2012. In April it acquired Indigo Consulting, a well-known Indian digital marketing & technology agency, under Leo Burnett India. This was followed by full control of Bartle Bogle Hegarty or BBH, one of the most revered agencies . a decade after taking a minority stake in the agency. In September it scooped up Amsterdam-based LBi, one of the last independent digital agencies.

    Facebook bought popular photo-sharing app Instagram in a combination of cash and stock. Facebook will allow photos taken via the app to be published to other social networks, and the ability to have followers and follow people who are not necessarily on Facebook.

    Lying on a CV can be disastrous as Scott Thompson, ex-CEO Yahoo! discovered. Thompson was fired within four months of joining the company, when some shareholders discovered he had lied about his bachelor's degree in computer science. Less than two weeks later he left the company.

    When Facebook went public this year, their opening price at $38 was termed a flop. The long-anticipated IPO was plagued by a series of problems like computer malfunction and reports of Facebook insiders alerting industry insiders about Facebook's earning even before it went public.

    Sir Martin Sorrell was in eye of a storm when news broke that advertising and marketing group WPP has handed its founder a 30% rise in his salary to '1.3million, while his maximum bonus rose from '3million to '6.5million. The rise took effect from 1 January 2011 and during that year the 67-year-old took home almost '13million, including '5.5million from a long-term incentive plan.

    The US Anti-Doping Agency initiated legal proceedings into Lance Armstrong's drug use charges. **** . a long standing supporter of the sportsman, decides to cut ties after saying that it had been misled by Armstrong.

    Besides being a showcase of world's finest athletes, London Olympics was a marketer's dream. 40 million people watched the opening ceremony. 11 of the biggest corporate sponsors like Coca-Cola, General Electric, Visa and McDonald's doled out nearly $1 billion for the marketing rights.

    Music album Gangnam Style, released by South Korean musician Psy became the biggest internet sensation this year. Gangnam Style debuted at number one on the Gaon Chart, the national record chart of South Korea.

    After years of seeing its China strategy derail, Google finally carved out its niche as a market leader in mobile phone applications. App developers and companies like BMW and GM used Google's AdMob to reach Chinese smartphone users. Google's strength in mobile ads is in contrast to its search-engine business in China, where it failed to catch up with homegrown favorite Baidu Inc.
