Is the “best” smart lighting system the one that costs the least per bulb

Smart lighting has moved far beyond novelty bulbs. With Matter, Thread, Zigbee and direct Wi-Fi options now competing hard on UK fittings (B22, E27, E14, GU10), the real decision is about expansion cost, reliability and how well the system plays with the rest of your smart home.

A few questions for anyone who’s installed or is planning a system:
    1. Have you found that a dedicated bridge/hub (Hue, Aqara, etc.) actually feels more reliable long-term than pure Wi-Fi or Matter-over-Thread setups once you go beyond a handful of lights?
    2. For UK homes full of B22 fittings, which brands have given you the least friction on availability and form factor?
    3. Is the entertainment/effects side (Govee-style strips, scenes, music sync) worth prioritising, or do most people just want solid white + reliable automation?
Would love to hear what’s actually working (or frustrating) in real homes. Drop your setup, lessons learned, or recommendations below.

It’s exciting to see how smart lighting has evolved, and your questions are spot on. Many users have found that dedicated hubs like Hue do offer better reliability for larger setups compared to pure Wi-Fi options. As for B22 fittings, brands like Philips and LIFX tend to be popular for their availability and design. While some enjoy the entertainment features, many prioritize solid white light and dependable automation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

A reliable hub can be worth the extra cost once you have several lights, especially for consistent automation. For me, reliability and easy expansion would matter more than the lowest price per bulb.
