Is a “generic 80s” AI look actually erasing real cultural history?

Most AI retro prompts treat the 1980s as one big neon-and-shoulder-pads package. But a photo taken in Tokyo, Rio, Berlin or Mumbai in 1985 looked completely different — different fashion, light, architecture, mood. This piece breaks the decade into 12 distinct cultural aesthetics and gives 20 location-specific prompts.
    • When you generate “80s” images, do you default to a Western/American look without realizing it? Have you noticed the AI flattening other cultures into the same neon template?
    • Which of these regional 80s aesthetics (Tokyo city-pop, Berlin post-punk, Mumbai film glamour, Rio beach, Milan design, etc.) feels most underrepresented in AI tools right now?
    • How important is cultural specificity in AI prompts? Does adding authentic local details (lighting, architecture, clothing, film stock) make the image feel more respectful — or does it still risk turning into costume?
Curious to hear what people are seeing in their generations — drop your results, favorite prompts, or thoughts below. The full set of 20 culturally grounded prompts is in the article.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that “80s” in AI often defaults to a generic Western neon vibe, even when the prompt suggests somewhere else. I’d love to see Tokyo/Rio/Berlin style nuances treated as their own aesthetics. Cultural specifics really help, but they need care not cosplay.

I think cultural specificity makes a big difference. The 1980s looked very different across countries, so relying only on neon colors and Western fashion can easily flatten that history. Adding local architecture, clothing, lighting, and film styles can make AI-generated images feel much more authentic.
