Is free storage still smart—or your costliest decision this year?

I’ve been digging into how teams actually use cloud storage day-to-day, and the differences between the big players go way beyond price and free tiers. Security, collaboration speed, and how well it plays with the rest of your stack seem to matter more than most of us admit.
    • What’s the one non-negotiable feature that made you switch (or stay) with your current cloud storage?
    • Have you ever lost time or money because a “cheap” option created friction for your team?
    • For hybrid or remote teams, which platform has actually improved collaboration instead of just storing files?

For me, reliable syncing and easy collaboration are non-negotiable. I’ve found that saving a little money upfront isn’t worth it when poor integration or slow file sharing wastes hours. For remote teams, real-time collaboration and dependable access across devices make the biggest difference.

A cheap storage plan can quickly become expensive if it causes collaboration issues or security concerns. For me, reliability, easy file sharing, and strong security would be the biggest deciding factors. Free tiers are useful, but the overall workflow matters more than saving a few dollars.
