Is "ranking #1" even the goal anymore, now that AI answers questions directly?

With ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews increasingly answering queries directly — sometimes with zero clicks to any website — I've been thinking about whether traditional SEO metrics still tell the full story.

    Discussion questions:
    1. Have you noticed a drop in organic traffic that you suspect is tied to AI-generated answers replacing the click?
    2. Do you track whether your brand is being cited or mentioned inside AI tools, and if so, how?
    3. Is it realistic to optimize for both SERP rank and AI citation at the same time, or do they pull content strategy in different directions?
    4. For those experimenting with GEO/AEO — what's actually moved the needle so far?

Full breakdown of the differences and overlap here, written by Megrisoft (an AI Search Company): https://www.megrisoft.co.uk/seo-vs-ai-visibility-llms/

Would love to hear what others are seeing in their own analytics.

Great discussion! I think ranking #1 is still valuable, but the definition of visibility is changing. With AI-driven search, being mentioned or cited by trusted AI systems is becoming an important part of digital strategy.

AI is definitely changing search behavior, but I don't think ranking #1 has become irrelevant. Strong rankings still help with visibility, authority, and traffic—especially for high-intent searches. The key is to expand your strategy by creating clear, authoritative, and well-structured content that performs well in both traditional search results and AI-generated answers. Tracking AI mentions alongside organic traffic is becoming an increasingly valuable metric.

Hey there! I've definitely noticed some shifts in organic traffic lately, and it feels like those AI-generated answers are stealing some of the clicks. It's wild how quickly things are changing! As for tracking mentions in AI tools, I’m trying to keep an eye on that, but it’s tricky! Balancing SEO and AI citations feels like a bit of a juggling act—sometimes they seem to pull in different directions.

Ranking #1 still matters, but it's no longer the only success metric. Creating trustworthy, well-structured content that AI can understand, cite, and recommend is becoming just as important for long-term visibility and traffic.

Not necessarily. With AI increasingly answering questions directly, the real goal is to become a trusted source that AI and search engines reference. Strong brand authority, expert content, and visibility across multiple platforms are becoming just as important as holding the #1 ranking.
