    What is cookie ?

A cookie is a piece of information sent to a browser by a Web Server. The browser then returns that information to the Web server to remind Web sercer about the previous visits of a particular user

i.e. Cookies serve as the means to identify a particular user. Once a user logs in to a website, a cookie can be made to ***ociate with the user's login information. For the subsequent visits by that user to the same website, the cookie can let know the website that the user is authenticated

For example, an E-Commerce site might use a cookie to remember which items you've placed in your online shopping cart. Cookies can also store user preference information, log-in data, etc

The second purpose of using the cookie technology is to differentiate between website users. The information about a user and his preferences can be held in the cookies and makes it possible for the websites to provide personalization to the users.

cookies can be explained like this
The most common meaning of "Cookie" on the Internet refers to a piece of information sent by a Web Server to a Web Browser that the Browser software is expected to save and to send back to the Server whenever the browser makes additional requests from the Server.

Cookies are usually small text files, given ID tags that are stored on your computer's browser directory or program data subfolders. Cookies are created when you use your browser to visit a website that uses cookies to keep track of your movements within the site, help you resume where you left off, remember your registered login, theme selection, preferences, and other customization functions. The website stores a corresponding file to the one they set in your browser and in this file they can track and keep information on your movements within the site and any information you may have voluntarily given while visiting the website, such as email address.

An Internet cookie is a small bit of information left on your computer after browsing the Internet. Often times this tiny file contains small bits of Information about what webpages you visited, how long you stayed on them, and what makes you tick in the World Wide Web. Occasionally you can get what is called a tracking cookie, which goes one step further and monitors every webpage visit, and may even log your p***words. This kind of tracking cookie is less typical without a Trojan infection.

A cookie is the term given to describe a type of message that is given to a Web browser by a Web server. The main purpose of a cookie is to identify users and possibly prepare customized Web pages or to save site login information for you.
When you enter a Web site using cookies, you may be asked to fill out a form providing personal information; like your name, e-mail address, and interests.
