"Meta Tags" are information inserted into the "head" area of your web pages. Other than the title tag ,information in the head area of your web pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. Instead, meta information in this area is used to communicate information that a human visitor may not be concerned with.

Yes, meta tags can help search engine spider to ascertain the kind of content that the web page has, in turn helping the spider to index the pages accordingly. A few meta tags that can be used on a web are <title><description><keywords><author><distribution><robots> etc.

if you use proper meta description tag for your pages, it will be displayed by search engines and write the tag for users not for search engines.

Meta Tags are html or XHTML tags used to provide structured meta data about a site.These tags are always placed in the head section of HTML document. Meta Tags are usually used to specify page description, keywords and any other metadata not provided through the other head elements and attributes.
These have four valid attributes-:
content
http-equiv
name
scheme

Meta tags are totally for search systems, they identify and optimize text, but meta tags are visible for users and readers too. You may view the code of source page at any time.

Guys, although meta tags are very important for a page, keywords are also necessarily spread through out the pages. However, too much meta tags and keywords can easily spoil the game, fix ratio for that, and choose keywords wrt the site only. and having less traffic but comparatively high hits.

<Title> tag is not a meta tag. It behaves like meta tag but it is not. Have important look on google meta tags.. Which are those?. Dont confuse with these. Title tag is for easily readable by user. It is important html tag.

META Tags META tags are part of HTML but are there for the sole use of search engine spiders. These (numerous) tags contain various information that the site owner wants to deliver to these spiders.

In the context of search engine optimization, when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.

The meta description tag and the meta keywords tag are not seen by users. Instead, these tags main purpose is providing meta document data to user agents, such as search engines. In addition to the well-known meta description and meta keywords tags, there are other useful meta tags, including the meta http-equiv tag, meta refresh tag, the meta robots tag, the meta copyright tag, and the meta author tag, etc. These tags are used to give web browsers and search engine spiders directions or data on various information.

In one form, meta elements can specify HTTP headers which should be sent before the actual content when the HTML page is served from Web server to client. For example:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html" />

This specifies that the page should be served with an HTTP header called 'Content-Type' that has a value 'text/html'. This is a typical use of the meta element, which specifies the document type so a client (browser or otherwise) knows what content type to render.
