The portion of the tag (generally, 200 to 250 characters may be indexed, though only a smaller portion of this amount may be displayed). This varies depending on searchengines, some search engines allow more that 250 characters while other search engines penalise your site if you use too many keywords. Coma can be use to separate keywords and you can use two or more word combination as keywords.

Your Meta Tags must contains Characters limits. Title should be of 50 t0 70 characters,Description contains 150 characters not more than that and Keywords sections must have 10 keywords in it.

I think it should have an average quantity of meta tags.

Here i would like to give a generally idea about limit of tags.it seems to be limited to 30 tags overall. I can add new tags to pages, but they won't be shown in the list. I have got to investigate if there's a way to weak the tag cloud component to show more.there is not a specific limit to how many tags one can add per page, but I've touched a limit on the length of the string contatining the space separated list of tags. This is kind of annoying, because you can have also some long tags and run out of space.

Great thread here. Very useful. Thanks.
Now that you have got the number of characters for the meta tags, the second important thing is to use the most relevant keywords in the meta keywords, rather than stuffing it with keywords and having a proper "to-the-point" description tag. Limiting your characters is really important. But, what is more important is what you put into it.

I think this is correct:
Title 65-70 characters in Google/Yahoo
Meta Description 150-160 real character
Meta keywords 120-130 character

A meta description tag is supposed to be a brief and concise summary of your page's content. It is designed to provide a brief description of your site which can be used by search engines or directories. When you write a meta description tag, you should limit it to 170 characters or 200 characters at most. Meta tags have never been a guaranteed way to gain a top ranking on crawler-based search engines.
